Kitchen Mini-Remodel That Turned in to a Bigger Job than We Thought

A friend of mind said, "Isn't that always true?  Whenever you think you're just going to replace a stove, or one cabinet, it always mushrooms!"  LOL  I figured I'd give a little bit of an update on our kitchen mini remodel.

Once we replaced the stove and moved it to where the gas line comes up, added a new outlet for the refrigerator and refashioned our old cabinets...

My husband told me to to go ahead and buy one 15" wide cabinet to replace the trash compactor.  We figured we'd be able to put off the rest of the kitchen redo until next year when we could plan out more, get quotes for new counter tops and so forth.  Little did we know that the 15" wide cabinet would be 1/2" taller than our already existing cabinets (didn't think to measure the height...thinking there was an industry standard).  Instead of taking it back, my husband told me to go ahead and get the replacement cabinets for the lower cabinets.  I headed to Lowe's while he headed to Home Depot for the counter tops.  While he was on his way home, he looked at his receipt and realized that he bought a 10' counter top instead of a 12' one, so he turned around and returned them.  When he got home, we discussed it and decided that we needed to go to a couple local kitchen places.  In a kitchen where everything had been taken out of the lower cabinets and packed in boxes by our daughter while we went in opposite directions, we smiled, hugged, shrugged our shoulders and said, "Oh well.  We'll get it done."

A couple days later we went to 2 different local kitchen counter places to pick out counter tops and get quotes.  We didn't want to go too expensive, but we didn't want it to look "cheap."  We're not doing a "high end" kitchen, but it will look nice when we're done.  In our area, if we do too much, when we decide to sell our house we won't recoup our investment.  So, we're keeping everything nice, usable, but inexpensive.  :)  We received phone calls from both places by the end of the day, thankfully because it was Friday.  One quote was half of what the other one was.  Same dimensions, counter top, same beveled edge, same back splash, same laminate.  I couldn't believe it.  We placed the order on a Monday.  Now we sit and wait for them to call to tell us that our counter tops are ready...daily...ready to drop everything we're doing to switch gears, rip everything out of the kitchen and get everything moving.  I can't wait!  But, while we wait, we do all sorts of other things.  :)

...to be continued, hopefully with pictures...
