Home School Curriculum Part 2-Math-U-See

If there were anything I have regretted in our home schooling tenure, it is the regret of not using Math-U-See from the beginning.

We switched from SOS to Math-U-See for both of our boys who are kinestetic, tactile, visual and concrete learners.  SOS is a good program, but Math-U-See tapped in to all of their abilities, explained things a little differently and made my boys take off and blossom in math.  While SOS is visual and auditory, Math-U-See took both visual and auditory and expanded on them with simple things like turning lined paper sideways so you can line up your columns, using the distributive property to solve things or giving you the option of doing the problems the "old fashioned" way [translation: How I learned it 30 years ago].  While we have only experienced 2 levels of Math-U-See, I can honestly say that I forsee us continuing with this program until our children graduate.

What about our daughter?  She is continuing on with SOS Math.  She's requested to stay with SOS Math.  She is doing well and understanding the concepts about 95% of the time with very little need for my assistance. Mind you, if there is something she doesn't understand, I explain it the Math-U-See way so that she does understand it, but she doesn't know I'm doing that.  LOL

Steve Demmey has quite a few videos, scope and sequence and sample lessons on the website for you to refer to if you would like to learn more about this program.  If you have a child who struggles with math, give it a try and see how things turn out.  :)

One thing I've learned is that no curriculum will work 100% of the time.  There will be glitches.  There will be misunderstood concepts.  It is up to us to find the answers and help our children learn and grow in to productive adults for the glory of God.
